Description: According to the EU SME Strategy for a sustainable and digital Europe “almost a quarter of SMEs in Europe already enable the transition by offering green products or services and many SMEs are already doing a lot for the communities where they are based. Some SMEs struggle with the transition towards more sustainable business models. It is essential to develop a support mechanism to SMEs in this process and equip them with instruments to understand environmental risks”.  

For this reason, the “SustainSMEs” project aims to describe the profile of a new job position to cover this gap, based on EQF and ECVET standards.  The “Sustainability Regulator” (SR) will be an additional role within the SME structure who will be equipped to perform self-assessments and audits in order to monitor the environmental, social and financial performance of the SME, in line with the environmental legislation that all EU countries have put in place. 

The project’s main objectives are: 

  • Develop a control mechanism within SMEs to increase or maintain their sustainability performance
  • Define a new role within SME structure, assigning specific roles and responsibilities related to sustainability
  • Promote the recognition of skills and qualifications according to EQF in Europe
  • Improve the SME sustainability practices and outlook
  • Foster innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy preservation, in line with the EU SME Strategy
  • Create more job opportunities through sustainable development
  • Strengthen the role of VET in educating SME management on sustainability policies and practices
  • Underline the use of EQF and ECVET as tools for achieving lifelong learning

Duration: 01/11/2021 – 31/10/2023 24 months
